Every year, since 2005, I’ve attended the largest dance festival in the US. It’s known as Ultra Music Festival. 40+ DJs, 20 tents and stages and over 70 thousand people for 2 days. Then there’s an after party at the Miami Heat Basketball stadium for 4 hours. Yes the dancing starts at 10:30AM on Friday morning and continues until Sunday at 4:30AM. I’ve never missed an Ultra Music Festival and I knew that moving to San Francisco would mean that I wouldn’t be able to go to the 2009 festival.
What’s the big deal? Well, people that know me well understand my passion for house music and dancing. I don’t live for it but I certainly don’t pass up a chance to cut the rug but then I just don’t stop. I’m not a raver kid, I’ve never done drugs but when the music starts I just dance and it’s uncontrollable.
The conference costs $200 and I never get a hotel because I just sleep in my car for a few hours and go back in. This year will be different, I have to fly to Miami during spring break season which means a $400 plane ticket, then there’s $150 a night hotels that are near the conference and then there’s a $200 ticket to the festival. That’s a lot of cash. On top of that, it’s a week after SxSW which I’ll be attending for the first time this year.
Oh decisions to be made. Expect me to have some pretty depressed tweets the week of Ultra because I’m going to miss it this year and that’s just a fact. I will follow people’s tweets over Twitter and spend the following week watching YouTube videos and checking out photos attendees took while there. That’s as close as I can get.
